Homogenising multi-colour laser light sources

How three individual laser diodes become a single, homogeneous and colour-accurate light field, without complex additional optics.

Photonics & Laser Medical Technology

01Starting point

Lasers have long been indispensable in measurement technology, and are now moving into lighting technology too, where high homogeneity across the whole beam field becomes a must. With multi-colour laser sources that is especially tricky: every laser diode emits differently, and it all has to come together into a homogeneous profile at the output. Even tiny power fluctuations show up immediately as colour zones, meaning circular colour rings instead of clean illumination.

02Approach

With our LUMUX technology. It brings together high homogeneity, colour accuracy and a compact design. Red, green and blue at 638, 520 and 450 nm are fed in individually and processed so that a uniform, colour-accurate light field comes out at the output, all without the complex optics that used to be needed to compensate for inhomogeneity and colour errors.

03Result

Large-area illumination in different colours, with high power and no colour deviations. And all that without the cost and space penalty that complex optical compensation used to require. It works not just for the three primary colours individually, but just as well for mixed colours such as magenta.

What is inside

The LUMUX homogenisation technology for multi-colour laser light sources, tested on red at 638 nm, green at 520 nm and blue at 450 nm individually as well as in RGB combination and mixed colours, with direct before-and-after proof of the homogeneity and colour accuracy achieved.

What happened next

LUMUX technology has since become the basis for laser lighting modules that need large-area, colour-accurate, high-contrast illumination, without complex additional optics.
