Motion concept for a 200 kg precision head

A 200 kg head - dispenser, embossing rollers, UV source, two cameras - had to move across 1600 × 1400 mm², hit ±5 µm and ±5 arcsec, and press against the substrate with up to several hundred newtons, all at the same time.

Photonics & Laser

01Starting point

A 200 kg head - dispenser, embossing rollers, UV source, two cameras - had to move across 1600 × 1400 mm², hit ±5 µm and ±5 arcsec, and press against the substrate with up to several hundred newtons, all at the same time. Mass, travel, accuracy, process force - all four at once. The previous concept with a hanging axis and pull cylinders had already shown where that goes wrong. Build the same thing again out of habit? Not an option.

02Approach

We sketched four gantry variants and ran FEM on the two best ones - two load cases each, with and without process forces. And we asked the right question: it's not the absolute deflection that counts - you can calibrate that away - but how much it changes because of the process forces. The result was almost a tie: 7.4 µm versus 6.9 µm in the process load case. No clear technical winner.

03Result

That very tie gave us the freedom to let the decision come down to what matters day-to-day: cleanroom space (a moving table needs twice the footprint) and accessibility at a 1.7 m wide chuck - which decides whether loading a film takes one person or two. So the customer doesn't just get accuracy, but a concept that also works in practice.

What's inside

A gantry over a fixed granite table, with the head moving in X and Y and rotating in θ. The structure - a weight- and bending-optimized granite beam on a ground granite table, carried by a rigid welded steel frame. At acceptance: under ±5 µm across the full stroke, ±5 arcsec, encoder resolution with plenty of margin, automatic correction of squareness.

And what happened next

The whole machine rests on this decision. The granite beam was manufactured, delivered, installed - every gram we saved was backed by a load case. The process forces and the requirements analysis behind them are their own stories in the same series.
