Five tonnes of precision into the cleanroom

A granite gantry, signed off to ±5 µm, disassembled, lifted by crane over a building, lowered into a basement, carried through a standard door, reassembled in the finished cleanroom and measured again on site.

Photonics & Laser Semiconductors & Microfabrication

01Starting point

The machine had to go into a cleanroom in the basement, with access through a perfectly ordinary door. Fully assembled, this is not a lightweight: a welded steel base structure, a ground granite table of roughly 1.8 × 1.4 m², a granite gantry, a 200 kg print head, plus controls and cladding, all signed off as one piece at the factory. Two options remained: build the machine so it could be taken apart, or take out a wall. And the cleanroom on the customer side still had to be finished before a delivery date could even be set.

02Approach

Modular from day one, not improvised afterwards. We designed in interfaces, lifting points and a fixed sequence for disassembly and reassembly right from the start. We wrote the transport plan like any other project document and walked through the access route on the floor plan beforehand. The granite gantry went by crane over the building, and down into the basement with a specialised machine-transport team.

03Result

The machine was fully signed off before it ever saw the room, so nobody pays for unproven performance. The cleanroom did not have to sit blocked off for months during assembly, and no wall had to come out and get requalified later. The machine is self-sufficient, with its own vacuum, just 230 V at up to 3000 W and defined compressed air. At the end came an on-site acceptance test, with the same numbers as at the factory.

What is inside

A machine with clearly defined split points and lifting points, a carefully thought-out transport and assembly plan, the right protective packaging for the granite surfaces, and the complete on-site reassembly including alignment of table and gantry. A site acceptance test repeated the relevant measurements against the same benchmark values as the factory acceptance test. The numbers hold where the production actually happens.

What happened next

Self-calibration automatically corrects the squareness of the gantry after reassembly, so no manual realignment is needed. And that same modularity is ready to go again years down the line, whether the machine needs to move or a unit needs swapping out.
